A School Free Life

As some people may know, bees have become scarcer than before. This is mainly due to 2 things: Habitat destruction Pollution We need bees to survive, and more than most people think. Without bees there would be no food and clean air. The food chain greatly relies on bees for many things, they pollinate flowers, vegetables, trees, fruit and anything else like that, which, in turn, feeds livestock. All this provides us with meat, fruit, and veg. We can help bees by; Reducing our pollution output and putting more flowers in our gardens.  There are many more ways to help bee's but I'm tired and want to go to sleep even thought it's 15:54 when I publish this.  I will try to start doing more posts regularly, as I have been slacking the last few months.

The UK is the worlds biggest consumer and distributor of cod and haddock, but this popular food is at high risk. Cod are being WAY over fished, we need to slow down to give them a chance to breed and reproduce. And fish industries have already been warned by MCS (Marine Conversation Society) , but a quote from Mr. Armstrong (the chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation) " The fishing industry is well used to these sorts of frankly meaningless publications… you can continue to buy your fish supper without worrying about whether there will be enough fish left in the sea " tells us that they are just brushing it off as a hoax... you really can't make this up. This species of cod have already gone extinct in Canada and the same could happen in the North Sea (the prime fishing area for cod). Haddock are too being over fished, their numbers have dropped under the recommended sustainable level for fishing and this will continue to drop unless we do something abou...

As some might already know there has been an incident on the 9th of February where 416 whales were beached in New Zealand's Golden Bay, and so far about 75% of those whales have already died. Volunteers have come to help the surviving whales and have managed to re-float about 100 whales, yet some of those whales CAME BACK and were re-beached and some haven't returned. But now they have to deal with all those that have died... OVER 300 WHALE BODIES!! These whales have an average length of 7.5 meters, so just imagine how they would do it... because I certainly can't. 😮😶 Dead whales also have the tendency to bloat up with gas and, uuuuuh, pop? Golden bay has had many beaching due to the hooked shaped sand ring called 'Farewell spit' that goes into the Tasman sea which makes it difficult to get out of using the whales sense of navigation, echo location. NO bugs were hurt in the making of this blog post!!! Yesterday, me nanny and Jessica went to Shire Brook Valley for a pond dipping session. When we got here we hung around for a bit, waiting, bored.... then we were brought inside and talked about life cycles and what we should find in the ponds. We then just quickly ran over some rules and we had a choice of two ponds, we went to the furthest one, about a minutes walk... so not they far away. Anyways, here are some photos of what we caught! We didn't just do pond dipping though, a couple of us (me included) did Clarity Testing, and the water was surprisingly clean, I could see 11 dots out of 12. I didn't know pond water could be that clear! The couple of us doing to Clarity Testing also did a PH Test, I got a 5,5 which means the water is quite acidic! Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at rock with teeny tiny cracks sometimes less than a mm apart to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the cracks to open up a lot more so the gas can escape to the head of the well. The process is carried out by drilling horizontally to the rocky layer VERY deep down. Fracking allows drilling to access difficult-to-reach amounts of oil and gas. It is thought to have gas security to the US and Canada for about 100 years, and has opened a way to generate electricity at half the CO2 emissions of coal. People suggest fracking of shale gas could add to the UK's future energy needs. A report by the Energy and Climate Change Committee in April said shale gas in the UK may help to secure energy supplies ….. On the 11th August, me, my sister and my grandad went on a bush craft day in Sherwood pines. As I had already been there once and enjoyed it, my grandad decided to buy us both a fire starter! When we got there we met up at a pretty well carved gruffalo, we waited for everybody to turn up. GRUFFALO: HMMMMM, should I ?  When everybody got here we were all given maps that led us to a "secret" camp where we would be doing all of the activities! once we had got there ( as I knew ) there was a ring of logs and a little fire pit in the middle.  Our first activity was shelter building! we grouped up with somebody else ( a little girl and a mum!) First we got our ridge pole and put it on a tree with a branch coming off at about shoulder height( to keep your body heat close to you)! We then put poles leaning against the ridge pole. On Wednesday as you would of seen if you've seen my older post we went to the apple store in meadowhall, when we got  back a  digital microscope was waiting for us at home, we spent a few hours looking at bugs and a bit of my grandads blood,. The microscope was purple and had a light on it, it could also take photos! it was really interesting.. except the dead spider, now THAT was creepy! Here are some photos!...   A fly eye! A flys wing! On the 18th July.... WE FOUND OUR FIRST GEOCACHE!!!!!!!!!! In case you didn't know what a geocache was it is basically a treasure hunt, but it can take you all across Europe! the one we found was only in langold woods! sometimes they can have gifts in and other times you swap things like books! If you find one there is always a piece of paper inside on which you write your name on. ;) This is me and my sister holding our first geocache! :) We will be going out finding more! there about 40 within 1 hours walk... Jessica WILL NOT like us after this!! o_O 

Yesterday on the 3rd of July, we went to Sheffield university again but this time for a ' Be a scientist' day!  It was a lot more interesting than last time, this time we didn't only go to the museum but when we came back we got to handle all sorts of creatures like: cockroaches, stick insects, meal worms, woodlice and meal worm beetles! I held the cockroach first then some other kids had a turn... After that I held a long stick insect that was a lot more active than the cockroach. I think Alicia was much more happy to hold to stick insect than the cockroach! :) we also had a look under some microscopes at real life bug heads... it was weird but extremely interesting! Oh, and by the way we won a years supply of pringles in a competition on Thursday. 

Today we went to a university in Sheffield. to get there me, alicia and my nan got a train from Worksop to Sheffield, as the trams weren't working we had to walk the whole entire way to the university. We had to ask for directions about 3 times. when we got there we were waiting about for around 15 minutes for the rest of the group to come. I saw a HUGE python skeleton which I found both sad and fascinating:). After that we went into a science room where we were spit into 2 individual groups.  My group went to the museum first were we saw LOTS of interesting things like:   Brains!!! ^ A hedgehog split  half skeleton and half skin!!!^ a variety of  reptiles !!!^ a crocodile and turtle skull!!!^ And its amazing that EVERTHING in the museum  is real!!!!!!(except a gorilla hand , that was just a model!)
