A School Free Life

Not really been updating but here's something worth talking about, out new puppy! Last Friday, 19th May, we went out to Heckington to pick up our little boy, Loki. We had been waiting for a e-mail from a lady so say when we can pick him up and I never stopped marthering nanny to check. Meanwhile, we were deciding what we should call him. My first suggestion was Loki, Norse god of mischief. We went though a few names like 'Darby', which I wasn't a fan of and soon neither was anyone else. So we settled for Loki, and we're glad we did, he lives up to his name, he's a little cute ball of nuisance! He's a pedigree Deerhound. Which is what we need because when he's older we looking to mate him the Freya and Freda so we have more puppies!!! On thing we have noticed is that he has HUGE paws, ABSOLUTELY HUGE!!! Right, so, I've established what's happening to some of the animals, but here's some that are making a come back (This is in the UK only): So cute 😍 The Common Dormouse was a victim of habitat destruction and climate change. The White-tailed Eagle's main threats include; Illegal egg collection, Poisoning and loss of habitat. It was the largest Bird-Of-Prey in the UK with no natural predators, in the early 1900's it disappeared from the wild. But, despite the same threats still around, numbers are growing thanks to Scotland's reintroduction programme! This post is a more serious one, I don't like doing serious one's but most of the time the things I write about need to be noticed, as not many people are doing much about the topics! Today I'm doing animal safety: This is a hedgehog that we rescued! In 1950 there were about 36 Million hedgehogs in Britain, 1995 there were around 1.55 Million, In less that fifty years the population of hedgehogs has decreased by about 34.5 Million. And now, in 2016, its fell even further, down to <1 Million... Its estimated that in the next 20-30 years there will be no more hedgehogs left. For them, the most common ways to die are either by car, pesticides and habitat destruction. We have actually saved a few hedgehogs when they are sick or underweight, and released them back. Then why do it and let others do it? About 40 years ago this almost stopped, almost. Today I'm just giving a little update on how our (not so) little chicks are doing, as only one chick hatched we bought two more, they're Orpingtons. ;) So, just under 9 weeks later they were built (by my brilliant grandad) a new little coop and a run in the back garden, as soon as it was done they were able to move in, but we waited a few hours 'cos' of something my (brainy) nanny looked up earlier in the day! They are now settled in and they've already spent the night in there after my grandad got them into the coop itself. On my previous posts I have talked about Freya my dog, about her accident and how she's getting on...... SHE'S FIXED!!!!! After her 3rd operation Freya was locked up in a kennel for two weeks, not able to move for 23 hours of the day (the 1 hour for doing her business) so that she could not move so that would give the wound a chance to heal.   This was her between operation 2 and 3!!!  During those 2 weeks in the vets we went up and down visiting her and giving her loads of treats. After being home from the vets for 3 weeks she was FINALLY discharged! She is now allowed to run, jump, play, lick and scratch (not to much!) and she goes on walks regularly with me and my grandad!  This is her freshly stitched up after operation 3, doesn't look great does it! The only REAL sign to show anything had happened is a HUGE scar running from one side to the other! This was at 4:30 pm when it just started to pip!  In a previous post i talked about incubating eggs.. now the eggs are hatching!!! :D Yesterday one of our eggs started to pip, As it can take 24 hours or more for a chick to hatch I thought we would have a chick the next day. A few hours later there was a HUGE crack and cheeping! It was really strange not being able to see the chick but hearing it. This was at 7:30, it had made a much bigger crack this time!    This was at 9:10, as you can see it has made an even BIGGER crack this time! This was only 5 mins after and look at the difference!!!!! When we were sent to bed (my eye's were just drooping) we was called down to see that the chick had kicked off a huge chunk of the egg. We stayed down a bit longer and it finally punched through and we saw a wing!  AWWWWWWWWW, look at it's beak! And this was minutes before the hatching! :D A few minutes later it was fully hatched! it looked bet...

On the 5th August we all went to pets at home, where me and my sister jess got to stroke furry animals. It was supposed to be a rat handling day but we had a phone call to say they had no rats so did we still want to go?..... YES!!! Even though there were no rats i still LOVED IT as we got to hold ANYTHING we wanted for a hour!!!! Here are some photos of the animals we held! (jess only held one thing!) On Monday Freya had to go to the vets for possibly the last operation. She will have to stay there in a kennel for a week we get to visit her daily but as I'm not very well I missed out on today. :( today is Friday her 5th day there and she looks a bit better but she needs to improve a lot, because this is her last chance... if it doesn't heal now than it is very likely that she will be put to sleep..... :'( but i am super sure that she will come home in 2 days time and stay with us for the rest of her life which hopefully will be another 4 - 5 years!!! Here is what she looks like.... YEP! She doesn't look very good but I don't mind as long as she is alive, healthy and happy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we started to Incubate 3 eggs so HOPEFULLY, In about 21 days, we will have little chicks... Here is some info on incubation!: PERFECT TEMPERATURE!!! ;)  First off, eggs will normally hatch in around 21 days, sometimes they could hatch a day or 2 early or late. Secondly, eggs need to be placed in the incubator a week or less after being laid.(We put them in a few hours after being laid:)!) An ideal temperature for a hens egg to hatch should be around 37.5 °C but 35. °C to 40.5°C is OK! You NEED to turn the eggs about 3 times a day to prevent the embryo sticking to the inside of the egg shell! DO NOT turn the eggs after the 18th day! We've 4 chickens of our own, 3 hens and 1 cockerel so the eggs were incubating are from our own hens which in my case makes it even more exiting! Our cockerel is a Light Sussex, one of our hens is a White Leghorn, another one is a Bluebell, and the last one is a Speckeldy so we don't know what we will come out with! ...

Today we went to a university in Sheffield. to get there me, alicia and my nan got a train from Worksop to Sheffield, as the trams weren't working we had to walk the whole entire way to the university. We had to ask for directions about 3 times. when we got there we were waiting about for around 15 minutes for the rest of the group to come. I saw a HUGE python skeleton which I found both sad and fascinating:). After that we went into a science room where we were spit into 2 individual groups.  My group went to the museum first were we saw LOTS of interesting things like:   Brains!!! ^ A hedgehog split  half skeleton and half skin!!!^ a variety of  reptiles !!!^ a crocodile and turtle skull!!!^ And its amazing that EVERTHING in the museum  is real!!!!!!(except a gorilla hand , that was just a model!) My first meeting went very well, i met a few children and they were very nice to me. I think i might of made at least one friend already, first i played a bit of pool with my nanny, she being older she won! then i played ping pong/table tennis. After, I played with my new friend for a bit outside on some exercise equipment. so yeah my very first meeting went excellent, an awful lot better than i thought. After we got home, I decided to watch a science video on how we breath. I learnt that artenes are vessels coming FROM your heart and veins are vessels going TO your heart. The size of your lungs is 75 square meters, wow thats alot of space! I've gotta go now and see if my chickens have laid any eggs:)
